6 Quick Fixes for a Furnace that’s Blowing Cold Air

It’s a chilly day and you are thinking of switching your furnace on. You do exactly that but you realize after a few seconds that it’s blowing cold air. At such a time, the only thing that your instinct is telling is to call a furnace repair expert that you know.

Of course, you have to first consider if you have the money to pay. What if you don’t? This is the time that you wish you knew what the problem was so as you can try to fix it. There are a number of things one can do. Here are 6 easy fixes to try out:

1. Adjust the Thermostat

If there is a problem with the setting of the thermostat, the furnace will blow cold air. If the thermostat setting is ‘on’, it means that the furnace is constantly running even when it’s not supposed to. You need to turn it to ‘auto’ if this is the case. Also, check the fan to confirm is it’s set ‘cool’. If it is, you need to change the setting to ‘heat’.

2. Replace the Air Filters

Dirty air filters are usually a concern since they limit the flow of hot air. This results in the emission of cold air. Moreover, when the filters are blocked by dust or dirt, they restrict air circulation and this translates to a heated furnace. Such a furnace is a safety risk. Cleaning the air filters require expert knowledge. Therefore, the most serviceable thing to do is to replace them.

3. Check the Pilot Light

Most furnace repair experts will look at the pilot light before anything else. If the light is out, this might be the reason why your furnace is blowing cold air. In such a case, you should relight it. In case it refuses to relight, you should check the gas valve and re position it. If this also fails, you need to examine the light to see if it’s dirty. If it is, clean it.

4. Check the Gas Supply

If the gas supply is inadequate, the blown air will be cold. The modern furnaces are built in such a way that they automatically lock down when the gas supply is turned off. You need to check it out and turn it on if it’s off.

5. Unblock the Condensate Drains

The modern energy-efficient furnace designs come with condensate drains which are responsible for removing water vapor that is created when the furnace is heated. The vapor can condense and clog the drains. You need to check the drain to unclog it if it’s blocked. Besides, no major furnace repair is needed if this is the case.

6. Check for Air Leakage

Lastly, you need to check the air ducts for cracks and holes. The two are a major source of air leakage and this contributes to cold air being blown by the furnace. If there is an opening, you need to seal them.

Clearly, you can save a lot of money if you fix your furnace yourself. Nonetheless, if the problem is something that you can’t fix using the above tips, you may consider calling a furnace repair expert. The expert will know what to do.
