How to care for oily skin?

Oily skin requires more care than normal skin type. If your skin is particularly oily, you will be bothered by the greasy texture and the show you exude. It is a myth to blame the food products that you are eating, for the presence of an oily skin.

According to Rebecca Kazin, an assistant professor of dermatology at the John Hopkins University, there is no particular data that can show that oily skin is caused by eating oily food products. Oily skinned people are born that way and there is probably nothing anyone can do to change it. Fortunately, however, there are exceptionally easy ways by which you can take care of oily skin.

The Dos for oily skin

  1. Say yes to cleansing

Oily skin requires more cleansing than the average skin type. Cleansing is one of the tried and tested methods to control excess oil, cleanse it and keep it clean at all times. Clean you oily face for three to four times a day to get rid of excess oil and dirt.

Foaming cleansers or gel based cleansers are best suited for oily skin. Look out for cleansers that say oil free. Look out for ingredients like Salicylic acid, Tea tree oil, Neem, Honey, and Turmeric so that your skin is cleaned, without abrasing it.

  1. Use of retinoid

Use retinoid at night to decrease the oil production in the skin. They are over the counter or prescription products which can help reduce blackheads and also to lower the production of sebum.

  1. Scrubbing is good

It is absolutely mandatory that oily skin is scrubbed more often than normal skin. Exfoliate one or twice a week to reduce the appearance of pimples, acne, whiteheads and blackheads. There should be a proper skin exploitation routine which will make you skin feeling fresher and younger. Be gentle during scrubbing.

  1. Use oil free products

To avoid creating shine and clogging of pores, make sure that the foundation and other cream products you use are oil free. Use a powder blush instead of a cream formula.

  1. Apply weekly face masks

Weekly face masks are highly effective after exfoliation; the weekly step of applying face mask on your face has increased benefits. Make a herbal, do it yourself mask with natural ingredients for better results.

  1. Apply toner

The toner you apply on your skin must be alcohol-free. Toning on a daily basis will help eliminate excess oil and banish dirt from the skin. Rosewater is a very good toner for oily skin. Alcohol-free toner works as a regulating sebum.

  1. Use blotting paper

Washing your face for the entire day can be a hard deal. Hence, it is better to use blotting paper to remove extra oil from the skin during the day. Absorb extra oil without washing the face and they also do not irritate the skin due to the lack of chemicals.

The Don’s for oily skin

  1. Do not use creamy cleansers

Milky, creamy cleansers will just increase unnecessary oils on the skin, making you feel oilier. Stick with salicylic or glycolic cleansers instead.

  1. Moisturization is essential

The myth associated with oily skin is that moisturization is not necessary for it. This is wrong as it might lead to skin irritation. Hence, use a gel or a serum with anti-aging properties as a moisturizer and leave behind the oily ones.

  1. Don’t use SPF powders

Sunscreens are usually manufactured with oil preparations that might be greasy. SPF powders are tempting in those situations. However, these powders do not have enough SPF and do not do anything good for the skin.

  1. Overwashing is not necessary

Having oily skin is not a skin problem. Hence, washing it too much will not help much. Washing the skin too much with soapy ingredients can lead to it feeling raw and red as the essential oils get stripped off. Cleansing is essential with soapy ingredients, but only once a day. Use blotting paper when you feel too shiny.

  1. Don’t pop or squeeze pimples

For an oily skinned person, there is nothing more fascinating than popping pimples. However, doing so might cause a major skin problem as scarring and red spots become prominent.

  1. Use minimal products

Oily skin looks best when the minimum number of products is used in it. Do not lather products after products and keep it simple. This lessens the chances of developing acne problems in the future too.

  1. Do not skip sunscreen

This is important for people having all kinds of skin types. Sunscreen is essential to be applied on the skin, no matter what the situation. Keep in mind to apply sunscreen before you go out every time.

Remember that having oily skin does not only have downfalls. People with oily skin tend to age slowly. Wrinkles appear later in life in oily skinned people. So embrace your skin and take care of it.
