Yanise Ho, 23, proved that One Girl Can! With a smile, a pair of Rollerblades, 43-pound backpack, no money and a strong desire to empower girls worldwide, Yanise Ho completed her 3,910 miles solo journey from Miami to New York to LA in November 11, 2018.

Yanise Ho’s adventurous journey started on March 14 from Miami. She traveled from East Coast to West Coast of U.S.A. Ho used a camera attached to a makeshift selfie stick to record her seven month journey. With a spirit of a mountain, this amazing girl battled severe heat, heavy rains, winds and impressively relied on kindness of strangers to give her food and shelter.



Ho, originally from Hong Kong happily shared that she could do it because of FAITH. She says if you believe in yourself, nothing can stop you, the sky is the limit.

So, What inspired Yanise Ho for this daring and long adventure?

Yanise shared that she had once seen an article which showed how a girl was married too young, forced to have physical intercourse and as a result she died. Ho said she had always known about child marriage and this incident broke her heart.

With a search and determination to do something to end child marriage and empower girls, she got to know about One Girl Can, a Canadian-based philanthropic organization.  The mission of the non-profit is to empower the girls in sub-Saharan Africa through education breaking the cycle of child marriage, poverty and gender inequality.

Since, the project matched her belief that one girl can achieve and make a difference, Yanise Ho partnered with the non profit.

5 foot 4 inch tall Ho became ready to be that One Girl to go on an adventurous trip with a mission to raise $20,000 funds and donate to the deserving poor girls in Kenya and Uganda for secondary school scholarships. Ho created the scholarship with name ‘The Bladress.’

Yanise believes that only with education, girls can  show their true potential. Girls can achieve more than the society predicts them to be able to.

Did she manage to raise the desired funds?

Yes, she did. Yanise Ho managed to raise over $13,000 in July end. Now, it’s around $33,000. And an anonymous generous donor in July promised her to match her goal and contribute more. An additional $ for $! Yanise said. That means if she succeeded to collect $20,000, the donor would contribute an additional $20,000.

How was Yanise’s overall experience?

Yanise Ho wasn’t good at skates. Will you believe that she bought her first inline skates pair in 2016? Yes, two years ago she started learning and within first two months of starting, Yasine Ho had ten stitches on her head and 50 road rashes.

Putting more efforts and practice, Ho then joined inline skate marathon in Minnesota. Yanise Ho then found Rollerblades faster and easier to control. After four months, she started her first journey( a test run) in skating from Savannah, Georgia to Miami. And even then, Yanise didn’t spend a singe penny. Everyone she met offered her food and shelter.

With the start of her journey, she always felt and believed that there is kindness everywhere. And someone in each corner will certainly help her for her noble cause. And she did. Her belief won. Everyone she met became her friends and like family. Whether it be a barbershop, a restaurant, somebody’s home, everyone welcomed Yanise Ho.

And on top of that, she never felt lonely. Because she loves to travel in freedom. This brave woman had always longed to be outside till 15 years because she spent her time inside her building.

And now she’s a free bird. Ho always met best people around her. So, there’s no chance to feel lonely. She had shared in her Instagram and videos how people have celebrated with her in her each successful steps. For instance, Parachute Home gave Yanise a welcoming home with stacks of donuts, bouquet of flowers, and rollerblade bubbles. The manager Stephanie organized a get-together party. The Law’s family flew from Santa Monica to meet Yanise Ho for the first time and made a little party. Ho’s friend from Miami also surprised her with flowers matching her outfit and many more.

What does Yanise Ho Plan to do next?

Yanise Ho plans to write a book about her journey she completed. She wants to capture every moment she has spent before she forgot anything. She’s also planning to make a visit to her family in Hong Kong and stay there for two months. In her future plans, Yanise Ho plans to open a tea shop in South Carolina and also do documentaries about people.

Highlights

Yanise Ho came to United States at the age of 17 to pursue her journalism degree. She joined University of Massachusetts Amherst online.

Throughout this journey, there is someone important who has helped initiating this adventure and is equally very proud of Ho.

The person is Lotte Davis. She is the CEO and co-founder of the only manufacturer of professional hair products in Canada, AG Hair. And she is the woman behind One Girl Can. Yes, Lotte Davis is the CEO and Founder of the non profit. And she is very proud to have collaborated with 23 year old Yanise Ho for making this adventure for a great cause successful.
